Selecting the right paper for a custom scratch-off book is one of the most important decisions in the production process, because paper quality directly affects print clarity, color performance, durability, and even how smoothly the scratch-off material adheres to the page. For most interiors, coated paper and smooth uncoated paper are the two best options because they balance print quality with usability. When printing on uncoated paper, we recommend testing before full production.
For interiors that feature colorful artwork, icons, illustrations, or photo-based graphics, coated papers, such as glossy or matte art paper, deliver the best visual results. Their smooth, sealed surface prevents ink from soaking into the fibers, which allows colors to stay vibrant, crisp, and detailed. When paired with gloss, matte, or soft-touch lamination, coated paper becomes even more durable and resistant to scratching, fingerprints, and general wear. Lamination also creates a protective layer between the printed image and the scratch-off ink, helping the scratch area release cleanly without tearing the artwork underneath.
If your interior focuses primarily on text, writing prompts, or simple line illustrations, smooth uncoated paper provides a more natural, tactile feel that supports clean handwriting without smudging. Its slightly porous surface absorbs pen or pencil marks easily, making it ideal for activity-style scratch-off books where users may want to write responses or notes. Although uncoated paper does not have the same level of shine or color intensity as coated stock, it offers excellent readability and a more subtle, elegant aesthetic.
Paper thickness plays a key role as well. For image-heavy pages, we recommend using 128gsm, 157gsm, or 200gsm coated paper for the interior pages because they maintain rigidity and prevent show-through from the back side of the page. For thinner books, especially those under 32 pages, we advise using 200gsm paper helps keep the book structurally stable when bound with hardcover or perfect binding. Children’s scratch-off books often require even stronger paper, as they are handled more roughly; thicker stocks improve durability and help maintain the integrity of the scratch-off areas.
For writing-focused interiors, 100-120gsm smooth uncoated papers provide the right balance between strength and comfort. They are thick enough to prevent ink bleeding but still flexible and light enough for comfortable page turning and writing.
If you’re choosing a board book-style scratch-off book, heavier C1S (Coated One Side) cardstock is the industry standard. Paper weights such as 250gsm, 300gsm, or 350gsm offer the rigidity needed for thick board pages. The coated side produces sharp, high-quality printing for colorful illustrations, while the uncoated back side bonds exceptionally well with adhesives during lamination and assembly. This construction ensures that each board page remains flat, strong, and durable, which is critical for scratch-off books designed for children or long-term use.
