For hardcover children’s book covers, durability and safety are essential. We typically construct covers using 2–3 mm gray board, which provides a strong, rigid base to protect the book from daily handling. The board is wrapped with 157 gsm art paper, available in either glossy or matte finishes, and then completed with your choice of glossy, matte, or soft-touch lamination. These laminations enhance visual appeal while adding protection against scratches, moisture, and wear, making the book suitable for repeated use by children.
Choosing the right interior paper is equally important, as it directly affects the book’s illustration reproduction, tactile feel, and overall reading experience. For illustration-heavy children’s books with minimal text, glossy art paper is an excellent option, as it delivers bright, vivid colors and crisp image detail. If you prefer a softer, non-reflective look that still maintains rich color reproduction, matte art paper provides a comfortable and premium reading experience. For text-focused or interactive books, such as fiction titles, workbooks, coloring books, we recommend uncoated paper. Its uncoated surface is easy to reading, writing and coloring on, while also reducing ink bleed-through.
For board books designed specifically for toddlers, extra durability is required to withstand tearing, bending, and frequent handling. In these cases, coated one-side (C1S) paper is the preferred choice. By mounting multiple sheets together, C1S paper creates thick, sturdy pages with smooth printable surfaces, ensuring long-lasting performance, vibrant artwork, and a safe, child-friendly finish.
