Looking for a book that’s more durable than a paperback yet holds more pages than a board book? Hardcover children’s books are the perfect choice. They offer long-lasting strength, a premium feel, and the ability to showcase vibrant illustrations and engaging content, making storytime more enjoyable while standing up to frequent use.
At BookPrintingChina, we specialize in high-quality OEM hardcover children’s book printing for publishers and self-publishers alike. Our team provides expert guidance on material selection, artwork preparation, and more, ensuring your book looks professional and is ready for any print run.
A removable dust jacket not only protects your hardcover children’s book but also adds style and visual appeal. We offer full-color printing on one or both sides, with finishes like glossy or matte lamination, spot UV, foil stamping, embossing, and die-cutting, creating a durable, eye-catching, and premium presentation.
Our cloth hardcover children’s books are available in a variety of cloth textures and vibrant colors like red, yellow, blue, pink and more. To elevate the design, we offer options like full-color printing, spot UV, debossing, and tip-in images for a unique, eye-catching finish.
The most popular and cost-effective hardcover children’s book sizes include 8″ × 8″, 8.5″ × 8.5″, and 8.5″ × 11″, while board books are commonly produced in a compact 6″ × 6″ format. Book size can vary depending on age group, reading level, and genre. Below are some widely used standard sizes:

For hardcover children’s book covers, durability and safety are essential. We typically construct covers using 2–3 mm gray board, which provides a strong, rigid base to protect the book from daily handling. The board is wrapped with 157 gsm art paper, available in either glossy or matte finishes, and then completed with your choice of glossy, matte, or soft-touch lamination. These laminations enhance visual appeal while adding protection against scratches, moisture, and wear, making the book suitable for repeated use by children.
Choosing the right interior paper is equally important, as it directly affects the book’s illustration reproduction, tactile feel, and overall reading experience. For illustration-heavy children’s books with minimal text, glossy art paper is an excellent option, as it delivers bright, vivid colors and crisp image detail. If you prefer a softer, non-reflective look that still maintains rich color reproduction, matte art paper provides a comfortable and premium reading experience. For text-focused or interactive books, such as fiction titles, workbooks, coloring books, we recommend uncoated paper. Its uncoated surface is easy to reading, writing and coloring on, while also reducing ink bleed-through.
For board books designed specifically for toddlers, extra durability is required to withstand tearing, bending, and frequent handling. In these cases, coated one-side (C1S) paper is the preferred choice. By mounting multiple sheets together, C1S paper creates thick, sturdy pages with smooth printable surfaces, ensuring long-lasting performance, vibrant artwork, and a safe, child-friendly finish.

At BookPrintingChina, we offer a wide range of finishing treatments to enhance the quality and appeal of your hardcover children’s books.

Glossy lamination adds a shiny, reflective finish that enhances colors, protects the cover from scratches.

Matte lamination provides a smooth, non-reflective finish that feels soft to the touch, reduces glare.

Soft touch lamination creates a velvety, suede-like finish that feels luxurious, reduces fingerprints.

Spot UV adds glossy, raised highlights to specific design areas, creating contrast, enhancing detail.

Foil stamping applies metallic or pigmented foil onto the surface using heat and pressure, creating eye-catching, luxurious accents.

Embossing creates a raised, three-dimensional design on paper, cloth or leather, adding texture, depth.

Hardcover children’s books can feature custom die-cut covers, lift-the-flaps, windows, tabs, and other interactive elements.

Gilded edges apply a thin layer of metallic foil—often gold or silver—to the edges of book pages.
Our minimum order quantity for hardcover children’s book printing usually starts at 100 copies. As we use offset printing for bulk print runs, so we recommend start for 500 copies, the unit price will be cheaper.
For more complex designs, the MOQ varies depending on features, such as interactive board books (e.g., lift-the-flap, cut-out windows): 500 copies; Pop-up or sound board books: 1,000 copies.
The number of pages in a children’s book depends on the book type, target age group, and story length. Here’s a general guide for different categories:
Board Books (Ages 0–3): Usually 8–40 pages (4–20 spreads). Board books use thick, durable pages suitable for toddlers.
Children’s Picture Books (Ages 3–7): Commonly 24–48 pages, with 32 pages being the industry standard. This length works well for storytelling and illustration flow.
Early Readers (Ages 5–8): Typically 32–64 pages, offering short sentences and simple vocabulary to help new readers gain confidence.
Chapter Books (Ages 6–10): Usually 48–120 pages, featuring short chapters, simple illustrations, and easy-to-follow plots.
Middle Grade Books (Ages 8–12): Generally 120–250 pages, with more complex storylines and minimal illustrations.
Young Adult (YA) Books (Ages 12+): Commonly 200–400 pages, similar to adult novels, allowing for deeper themes and character development.
Each type of children’s book has its own structure and production requirements, so the ideal page count may vary depending on the story length, design layout, and intended reading level.

Here’s a clear, easy-to-follow guide to help you prepare your hardcover (casebound) cover files correctly.
Hardcover covers are printed on a single sheet of paper, which is then wrapped around the greyboard to form the finished case.
We recommend creating your hardcover cover file using our template. Once your template is ready, review the design guidelines below to ensure accurate setup. (Remenber, when you export your cover file, please remove the guidelines.)
Calculate the overall dimensions of your hardcover cover, including both the total cover height and total cover width:
Start with the height of your interior pages.
Add 0.275 inches (7 mm) to the page height.
Then add 0.79 inches (20 mm) to both the top and bottom—1.58 inches (40 mm) total—for the foldover. This foldover area wraps around and is glued to the inside of the greyboard. Extend your artwork fully into this area, even though most of it will not be visible.
This gives you the total cover height, including foldovers.
Begin with the width of your interior pages.
Subtract 0.16 inches (4 mm) from the page width, while for a round spine, subtract 0.2 inches (5 mm) from the page width.
Add 0.79 inches (20 mm) for the foldover on each side. (See above)
Add 0.43 inches (11 mm) for the hinge area (NOTE! Remember, for a square spine, add 0.4 inches / 10 mm), which allows the cover to open smoothly without stressing the spine.
Multiply the adjusted page width by two.
Calculate the spine width using our spine width formula and add it to the total. For rounded spines, multiply 1.08 by the standard spine width.
You now have the total cover width, including spine, hinges, and foldovers.
Example: For an 8.5″ × 11″ hardcover book with a 0.328″ spine.
Total cover height: Start with the interior page height of 11″. Add 0.275″ to reach 11.275″. Then add 1.58″ for the top and bottom foldover areas (0.79″ × 2). This results in a total cover height of 12.855″.
Total cover width: Begin with the interior page width of 8.5″ and subtract 0.16″ to get 8.34″. Add 0.43″ for the hinge and 0.79″ for the foldover, bringing the width to 9.56″. Multiply this figure by two, then add the 0.328″ spine width. The final total cover width is 19.448″.

Bleed is the extra margin trimmed after printing, preventing white edges. A standard bleed size is 0.125 inches (3mm).

CMYK is the correct color mode for printing. RGB files convert automatically and may shift colors. Use 100% black for text.

Images in prepress files should be at least 300 dpi to ensure sharp details, clear images, and professional print quality.

We recommend using high-quality PDF files, as Adobe InDesign exports print-ready PDFs for precise, consistent printing results.
